Don't Look Back
from Crucible, PA
Written by: Alex Shelbourne
On the grass past the high school parking lot
We find Mary and her brother, who should be in class, but today they’re not
Instead they sit on their hill and look out on the town
Laugh as they count each shade of brown
And make promises that are made here everyday
She says
I don’t think I can stay in this rut we’re in
I don’t think I can sit here, and just wait for our lives to begin
What if we took dad’s Dodge, if the engine still runs
Ride top-down past Highway 21
And go anywhere you wanna go, just far from here
Let’s head North on the track
And not look back
Let’s head where the sky meets the floor
And see if there’s any more
Let’s set things right
And leave tonight
‘Cause why should we stay
In a town that never liked us anyway?
I hear there’s forests so big, as if they never stop
I hear there’s cities with towers that go so high you can’t see the top
Well we could see them all before Dad knows we’re gone
Just follow down that long road that stretches on
Into nothing, yet at the same time, into everything
I bet Nashville is lovely this time of year
Or down South in New Orleans, my God, the food we’d never get up here
And we would sink our feet deep in the west coast sand or
Steamboat ‘cross the Rio Grande
And never spend one day under the ground
And we’ll never be found
Once we head North on the track
And never look back
No amount of coal
Is worth sellin’ my soul
Let’s set things right
And leave tonight
‘Cause why should we stay
In a town that never liked us anyway?
It’s a feeling every child knows
But years go by, they grow up, and in the end, no one goes
And they were never going to, they knew deep down
But the truth is that in this town
Dreams do lot whether or not they come true
So continue
Go and head North on the track
And never look back
Even if it all falls through
It lives on in you
Let’s set things right
Take that Dodge and leave tonight
‘Cause why should we stay
In a town that never liked us anyway?
Yes, why would you stay
In this town, The Middle of Nowhere, USA?
