Midnight Drive

from Crucible, PA

Written by: Alex Shelbourne

Flying down the road like a shootin’ star

Don’t know how much gas is in the car

But I don’t need much, I ain’t goin’ far

Just a mile or two

Last month they shut the coal mine down

I’ve looked for work but there ain’t much around

This town is a hundred men who let their families down

Just like I let down you

But I’ll wear the mask that all men are taught

Say I’m okay, even if I’m not

It’s quiet tonight on I-5

Perfect for a short midnight drive

Money low, debts on the rise

Mother says we’re fine, but she lies

How can I stand to look you in the eyes

And say there’s nothing to eat tonight?

A life of wearing the mask that all men are taught

Of sayin’ I’m okay when I know I’m not

It’s quiet tonight on I-5

Perfect for a short midnight drive

Tonight I came home when I couldn’t drink no more

Your mom was waiting at the door

In a haze I knocked her to the floor

As you looked at me in fright

I take my hands off the wheel, push the pedal down

I’m taking the only way out of this goddamn town

Headlights ahead come into view

I close my eyes, count to ten, and think of you

Baby, don’t do what your daddy taught

Don’t say you’re okay if you’re not

It’s quiet tonight on I-5

Perfect for a last midnight drive
