Unanswered Call
from Crucible, PA
Written by: Alex Shelbourne
The night is cold and the air is still on the porch tonight
As I sit up and count every star in sight
Picking up from the night before
When did the little girl who looked up and dreamt of the family she’d start
Become the mom barely keeping it from falling apart
Can this house really take much more?
Now I ask of you, as I always do
How, when all strength seems gone, I carry on
I don’t know if you’re listening
Or if my prayers just vanish into the air
But right now I don’t care
I’ll take an unanswered call over one night with no hope at all
And I know
There’s a reason for this feeling deep in my soul
That every day, says I’ll be okay
How does the wife whose husband left just last night
Hold her child and say all will be alright
And in her heart know it’s not a lie
Tell me why does the boy who’s never known true love in his life
All day pick flowers for his future wife
With no sign that she’ll ever come
How, how, please tell me how
With no promise in sight, we still fight
Does it mean that you’re listening
That my prayers go farther than the nighttime air
That you’re really there
I’ll take an unanswered call over one night with no hope at all
Cause I know
There’s a reason for this feeling deep in my soul
Saying all we can do, is just make it through
So that’s what I’ll do
How, tell me how
When all hope is gone, you carry on?
Cause I know that he’s listening
That my prayers are heard farther than the nighttime air
And I know he cares
I’ll take an unanswered call over one night with no faith at all
And I know
There’s a reason for this feeling deep in my soul
That every day, tells me we'll be okay
